Wake Forest law school student group OUTLaw’s LGBTQ+ Legal Clinic has been selected by the North Carolina Bar Association (NCBA) Pro Bono Committee to receive the NCBA  2018 Law Student Group Pro Bono Service Award, according to organizers. The LGBTQ+ Legal Clinic will be honored during the 2018 NCBA annual meeting in Wilmington on Friday, June 21.

The award honors an outstanding law student group whose pro bono project benefits low-income people in North Carolina, according to April Giancola, director of Public Interest Advising at the University of North Carolina law school.

Student members of OUTLaw, the law school’s LBGTQ+ organization, teamed up with members of the Pro Bono Project’s Wills and Health Care Advocacy teams to host the Fall Legal Clinic on Oct. 21, 2017 at the law school. The students, supervised by practicing attorneys, offered several legal services to the LGBTQ+ community, including:

  • Gender Marker and Name Change Services

  • Living Wills and Health Care Powers of Attorney

  • Testamentary Wills

OUTLaw members also participated in the Winston-Salem Pride Festival and Parade on Oct. 13, in downtown Winston-Salem.  “At the OUTLaw Pride booth, students promoted the Fall Legal Clinic’s offerings to potential clients,” explained OUTLaw Community Outreach Chair Corri Hopkins (JD ’19).

The clinic, which was held in conjunction with National Pro Bono Week, was c0-sponsored by North Star Community Center and the Southern Coalition for Social Justice.

The NCBA Pro Bono Activities Committee advises the NCBA Foundation on activities relating to pro bono delivery of legal services; works with NCBA sections, divisions, and committees to implement pro bono and public service projects; engages members in the delivery of pro bono legal services; and recognizes attorneys doing pro bono work through the annual Pro Bono Awards and the Pro Bono Honor Roll.

Tickets for the event are $40, and registration for the event closes May 1. Space at the event is limited. To learn more and register for the event, please visit the event page.
